ORLANDO, FL — The association’s 24th State of the Air report shows more than one-third of Americans live in unhealthy air polluted areas. Despite this, numbers show improvement.
According to the American Lung Association report, 119.6 million American citizens live in areas that are labeled unhealthy with high levels of pollution in 2022. Nearly 64 million Americans live and breathe in “F” graded polluted air.
As bad as this may sound, the numbers from 2021 to 2022, decreased. Back in 2021, the number of people living in unhealthy polluted areas was 139 million Americans. That’s a decrease of 17.6 million people.
The report shows the most polluted cities with the unhealthiest breathing air were all on the west coast. Mainly, in California. Four out of the the top five most polluted cities in the U.S. are Bakersfield, Visalia, Fresno and Los Angeles. The only city out of California in the top five is Fairbanks, Alaska.
Below is a full list of the 25 most polluted cities:
On the other side of the spectrum, the cleanest air to breathe in the U.S. showed 3 cities in North Carolina, including Asheville, Greenville and Wilmington. Bangor, Maine and Lincoln, Nebraska made the list, as well as Honolulu, Hawaii.
Nowhere in Florida made the list for healthiest air to breathe, but on the bright side it also didn’t make the top 25 worst either.
