According to KREM and KIMA, the incident occurred Saturday at a home on East Hamlet Street in Othello. Othello police said Felipe Tapia-Perez, 27, accidentally fired a gun, striking the boy, later identified as Jeremiah Tapia-Arteaga, in the head, KIMA reported.

Family members rushed to a nearby hospital with the boy, who was flown to another hospital in Spokane, police said in a Facebook post. The child later died, authorities said.

Tapia-Perez “is cooperating with law enforcement and has admitted to accidentally firing the gun,” according to the Facebook post. He was arrested and remains in the Adams County Jail, police said.

The Washington State Crime Lab is assisting with the investigation, police said.
