According to police in Moline, Illinois, and Bettendorf, Iowa, the pedestrians were struck at about 2 a.m. CDT as they crossed the path, located on Interstate 74 on a span officially known as the Iowa-Illinois Memorial Bridge, the Quad-City Times reported.

According to the Moline Police Department, the SUV entered the path from the Bettendorf side of the bridge and traveled its length until striking the pedestrians just outside the Moline pathway entrance, WHBF-TV reported.

The driver of the SUV is in custody, according to the Times. The investigation is ongoing and no charges are expected before Monday, the Moline Police Department said in a news release.

The path opened on April 28 after five years of construction, the Times reported. The path is 14 feet wide and has a gap between the vehicle lanes and where pedestrians and bikers access it. The center of the path features an oculus and a seating area, the television station reported.

The path reopened later Sunday morning, WQAD-TV reported.
