16-month-old shot, killed by 5-year-old sibling who found gun

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A 16-month-old boy was shot and killed Tuesday at an apartment in Lafayette, Indiana.

The Lafayette Police Department said that a 5-year-old gained access to a handgun inside an apartment Tuesday afternoon. He shot and killed a 16-month-old boy who was later identified by police as Isiah Johnson, according to The Associated Press.

Officers were called at the Romney Meadows Apartment Homes after 3 p.m., according to WISH. When they arrived, they found the 16-month-old dead inside the apartment.

The call was reportedly placed by someone outside of the apartment about a child not breathing, the Journal & Courier reported.

Lafayette Police Department Lt. Matt Gard told the newspaper, according to the AP, that there were two children and one adult inside the apartment at the time of the shooting.

An autopsy was performed on Wednesday and it found that the boy died from a single gunshot wound, Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello said, according to the newspaper. The manner of death remains under investigation, as well as the toxicology reports.

According to the newspaper, police said that the 5-year-old, who was identified as the boy’s sibling, was responsible for shooting him.

Police said that no arrests have been made as of Wednesday morning, according to the Journal & Courier.

Officials said the case will be sent to the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office to be reviewed and see if any charges will be filed, the AP reported.
