Hurricane Tips

  • Never run a gas-powered generator indoors, not even in the garage.  Keep the generator outside about 10 feet away from any structure and run an extension cord indoors.
  • If you are evacuating, first freeze a cup of water in your freezer. Put a quarter on top of the ice in the cup. If the quarter is frozen on the bottom of the cup - your food may not be safe.
  • Never try to drive through flood waters. It only takes a foot of storm surge water to sweep a car off a road. If you see flooding, do not drive in it. Seek shelter and stay there.
  • A dishwasher actually makes a good safe during a storm. Store your ziplocked photos, documents and jewelry in it during a storm. It’s waterproof and looters won’t look there.
  • Write important contact numbers from your phone down. If your phone is damaged, you may not be able to access important phone numbers of friends and family members.
  • Always have a battery-operated radio, flashlight, candles and extra batteries in your hurricane kit. Tune into local radio stations for important safety advisories and weather updates.
  • Take pictures or videos of your belongings before a major storm. Email the video or pictures to yourself, so you’ll have proof of your belongings after the storm for insurance purposes.
  • Heed evacuation orders. People are often injured or stranded because they decided to refuse evacuation orders. This is especially true if you live along the coast lines. Listen up and get out.
  • Fill your bathtub with water before a major storm. You can use a pitcher of water to fill the reservoir tank of your toilet, which will allow it to flush even if the water is turned off.
  • When using candles in your home be sure to keep flames away from curtains, lamp shades and other flammable items. Always keep children and pets away from open flames.
  • Use your car to charge your phone if the power is out. You should also charge up any power storage devices or backup batteries and use them only when needed.
